Now's the time to start collecting all the valves, cylinders cocks, injectors, check valves etc you need. By the time you need them hopefully you'll have received most of them. Sometimes people wait until they actually need them, then realize the parts won't arrive for 3 months etc
So in answer to this. It has started. I am moving to the backhead next. I have ordered a water glass kit and pressure gauge from Loco-Parts. Along with pulling the material together to do the fire box door and throttle levers. I need to order the brass bar for the turret. I took photos of all the back heads at Mid-South this weekend to find the best looking layout all the fittings an lines.

I also have a economy injector from Super Scale with plans to order one for the other side from EE. I had been having a problem with the Small EE injector on the American but friends "educated me" in the proper care and cleaning needed to run them. It ran great all afternoon today. I figure the first of every month I will be ordering valves and such to have as needed. Next thing to be the three boiler check valves for up front. I believe they will be coming from Loco-Parts.

One recommendation on the check valves.

Put a valve between the boiler fitting and the check valve so you can shut off the check valve and fix it under steam if needed.
I've seen people use a angle globe valve from locoparts, PM research etc into the boiler, then after that, use a globe check valve. PM research makes great globe checks.

Exactly. I have this set up on my American and have had to use it more than once to seal off one of the water systems due to cracked fittings or failed check valves. Then I could keep running.

And here's one of Charlie on his 'slightly smaller' locomotive from Friday.

My eyes wonder of the cab is too narrow compared to the height? And considering controls like the Johnson bar.
Are the frame, tender tank and cab wider than the cylinders?
Much to discuss on this subject but it is late. And the answer is complicated.

Final decision. Yes the cab mock up is too tall for its width. My problem is trying to fit a 2.5 inch cab aft of the wheels and cylinders when they scale out at almost four inches to the foot.

Pontiacguy and I have had many conversations on sticking with 2.5 inch scale as the cars are more available. I have given much thought to this and decided the final solution comes back to the TLAR rule. It really just needs to look right, never mind what scale it is.

When it comes to cars, like the Little Engines, American, it will not bee to a specific scale. I will end up building the cars too when it comes down to it. Due to my shop and storage space problems, the engine at best will end up with no more than a boxcar, gondola and caboose. I will look to a happy medium on their sizes.

Mean time the cab deck is about to widened out one inch on each size using light weight angle iron welded to the channel rails. This will give me a deck 22 inches wide and I will bring the mock up down to 20 inches from the current 22 to see how it looks.

Be sure that you can reach all the controls easily. A friend of mine built a 10-wheeler with a section of the center of the cab roof cut out so you could reach in,
Now this comment does make me smile.

This is what I am use to running now. A major effort to balance the engine while shoveling coal and reach all the controls

This is where I am going. And I will be adding an inch to the space between boiler and cab walls giving me 4.5 inches on each side. Of course all the controls are larger

Those dimension changes sound/look like a good compromise.
Nice that your project is not limited by prototypical constraints.
The results should be delightful.

The final decision on the Cab width was to widen it by 2.5 inches. This will take it out to 22.5 inches. Reason for this number is I found a couple of pieces of 1.25 inch angle iron to weld on to the sides of the framing back there.

In the mean time, I worked on the Firebox door today.

Made this from scraps from another job. four inches by 1/4 inch HRS with the hinges from 1/2 by 1/8 inch cold rolled steel.

Working on the backhead,

The water glass and gauge came from Jeff at Loco-Parts.

The fire door fame was fitted with 5-40 countersunk machine screws and I will need to make the latch for it.
