Progress on the caboose Frame

After going to a smaller bearing for the caboose, everything fell into place for a more scale look.

Before I go any farther realize I am not going for a total scale look on the pedestals. I am copying the ones I did on the Rust Bucket trailing truck.

The pedestals are cut from the same cold rolled mild steal I am making the frame bars out of. They will be thru bolted to the frame with 10-32 cap screws.

One of the neat toys I found in my boxes of stuff was a TAPMATIC R3 unit. I traded something for it years ago and forgot it was even the box.

It made the tapping of the twenty four 10-32 holes a snap.

The American's Caboose is coming along slowly.

The frame has a lot of detail work left

The journal boxes need the front faces and doors worked on. The springs were salvage from the Lyn rear truck.

The planking is almost finished on the outside. I am planning horizontal planks on the inside.

I found a supplier for the outside lamps. Who makes a 1.5 inch scale kerosene lamp for the inside?

Thanks Paul.

will order two of those and one of the red lanterns to experiment with. Hoping to run grain of wheat lights or diodes in them for cabin lighting

Kombrink would laugh at what the caboose project has turned into.

I am building it with an interior, as the original was done, and adding lights.

It is now sitting on its suspension with just a little more work in that area. I do need to order couplers. I am going to order from Tom Bee after the holidays.

Last night I added the end rails. They were only glued in on the one inch model but as I will be hooking safety chains to it I went ahead and used screws along with the glue to ensure they stayed in place. I covered the screw heads with plugs cut from the same plank the parts came out of. Not sure if it will be painted or finished clear as it is black walnut scrap.

I was just going to slap a coat of paint on the inside but realized you can see a lot thru the windows. Now I am ripping up old scraps and planking the inside also

On a side note, the brass and ball bearings came in today for the Snifter valves project. Member Glen Lewis was kind enough to give me a set of drawings to work from that are the right scale for the American. The body is threaded for a 1/8th NPT.

Have you considered using those injection molded plastic couplers for this caboose? It is so light, I don't think that you could break them with it. They also look nice, and are really cheap to get. Just a thought.

Years ago I noticed Larry Kombrink was missing a lot of one of his thumbs. Said it got sucked into the space between a grinding wheel and the plate.

For just a second I discovered what that felt like tonight on a vertical sander.

Oh well..... Not as bad a and it will grow back. Well, some of it anyway.

Ouch, remember sand wood, paint, metal, flesh is not for sanding.
