Building a Veranda

Post by Broken Knuckle »

Hello, my name is Jeff, I'm a 40 year tool and die maker, retired. Wanting to build a 1.6 scale UP Veranda but, I'm having problems finding a good set of drawings for it. If anyone has a link or a contact, it would be appreciated. Spent the last week at Train Mountain with friends and had a blast. Going back in September for another meet. Talked to a lot of people about drawings but came up empty handed. Did buy a set of plans and casting for a shay. That will be a project for another day. Thank you.

By "Veranda", are you referring to the U.P. gas turbine locomotives with the "Veranda" body recesses?

Yes. Second generation GTEL, 4500hp with the outside walkway. Numbers 61 through 75.

For those of us not familiar with the engine, can you post a picture?

Weren't those the turbine engines? Didn't they call those "big Blows" or am I thinking of something else? The 4 trucks look like that on the turbine engines, but I didn't remember them having that walkway. I found a couple of pictures on the web, though. If I recall correctly, the tank right behind the locomotive was the fuel tank, because they used a LOT of fuel!

I think the veranda was only on one side, right?

There were three generations of GTEL. The Second generation had a walk way down both sides because it was so noisy inside. That's where it got it's name the Veranda. I have read that the original design called for a double end cab design. The four AAR type "B" trucks on a bolster is going to be a challenge on 7.5 gauge track. Going to start on the trucks and work my way up.

Are you going to reproduce the tank car as well? That would be cool.

I will build the tanker car. Somehow I need to build a seat into it and still make it look good. If I sit behind the tanker car, that's a long ways back in order to see the points on a switch.
