Starting over on a new CliShay project
Way back when, a bigger version of a CliShay was built and lost thanks to a family issue....
But being able to start over is a blessing:
First, getting trucks made up.
Trucks have a 14" wheel base.
As far as size is concerned, going to try to keep my CliShay in the under 72" by 20" range so it could fit into a medium sized pickup.

Nice to see this one being worked on again. I remember reading your original build on it when I started building mine.

Re: Starting over on a new CliShay project
I'm starting over, from the rails up...
These below parts will fit in the side frames, sprung and will be attached to the the center bolster:
Parts before trimming Parts after trimming in the chop saw. Tried working yesterday, Sunday morning and the chop blew out the breaker in the garage. Been having triple digit heat out here in beautiful and sunny SoCal.
I'm drilling these parts out in the lathe using the four jaw chuck. Don't have a drill press just yet. The opposite sides will be drilled to fit a 5/8" spring.
Note to self: Need to fabricate a splash guard to fit over the head stock/chuck in a 1940's era 9" swing South Bend lathe.
Also, I'm researching vertical boilers: Sorry, but the above prints are hard to see in this photo.
On the left is a Martin Evan print for a single 2" bore cylinder (can't find the my other print for a twin 2" cylinder). Found this one on eBay.
The print on the right is something of an oddity. It doesn't look like something I'd like to build....
I originally bought the M40 Martin Evans print that would provide steam for a twin two inch bore cylinder marine engine (from AJ Reeves across the Pond). It's lost, thanks the moves. Can't find it online now. If someone knows were I can find a print, please PM me. Doesn't seem Reeves has it in their inventory.
I'm figuring the boiler would need to be 12 to 14 inches in diameter, using pipe and stand 24 to 36 inches tall including the fire box. 5/8" tubing could be used for fire tubes. I have plans for two inch bore twin cylinder marine engines (Bertha and a Hasbrouk #5). It'd be nice to have a boiler that has the umph for up to three inch bore twin marine engine.
Acquiring material for the bolsters and the frame... Stocking up on parts for the drive train...
To be continued....

Great stuff. Let me know if the Evans print turns up, sounds like something I'd like to have 'for the future'...
P.S. I'm down the street from you in Tehachapi...

Hi Harlock. Haven't been up Tehachapi way in almost a year. It was Fair time in the Antelope Valley last year when I came out to hear Mike Massee talk on the SP narrow gauge RR that ended in the Owen's Valley.
Found some interesting boiler links tonight.

And Beckmann Boating sells verticals boilers that might fit the bill. Don't know if these are the correct prices on the page:

One of the smaller beckmann boilers looks pretty good - if you do the lagging yourself you can save a lot of cash. Price is reasonable for the base unit.
Best,

Marine boilers?
Contact the Northwest Steam Society, and you probably find small boilers for sale.

Also Everett Engineering in Everett, Washington, is pretty famous for making good marine boilers.
Several are used by NWSS members.

Russ,
alas, I think Everettt Engineering was unresponsive to the last KLS boiler build. Apparently they recommended a sub and the guy never responded to multiple emails and phone calls. Years ago they had S stamp welders on staff, but maybe now they are all gone?? Still might be worth a phone call.

Bummer that Everett Engineering did not respond to boiler build inquiries.
Changing times, I suppose.
That's why all of us here are keeping History alive by building and operating steam stuff!

Re: Starting over on a new CliShay project
Lately, everyone has been quisy about coal fired boilers. It'll most likely be propane fired.
Working on the frame design. Looks like I can fit a 12" diameter boiler on this project. A 14" boiler would possibly allow for a bigger engine w/bigger bore.

Re: Starting over on a new CliShay project
Thanks for the information and the links.
I've got these below cylinders sitting around. Told they may be older Allen Model castings.
Judging by the other parts that came with them, aluminum, these may be part of a Mogel.
Had these for over a year now, sitting in my parts box
They've got some wear and pitting. Maybe they could be made into some sort of stationary horizontal engine.
