As it turned out, the rear axle quartering was off .009"
Would you please share more information? What was the setup to measure the error?
I've heard of making an offset key. Even if there are no photos any explaination would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have heard it said that reaming Oilite bushing closes off the pores that make them work so well???

Recommended was pushing through a ball the correct size...

I checked with John on this, as he did the work to locate the offending driver. John said "Drivers between centers. Crank pin against chuck jaw. Indicator against other pin. Compare readings."

As for the .009" correction, he likely pressed the wheel off, filed the key slightly, and pressed back together. I had a quartering correction that I did on my LE mogul, and that is all that was required to make the correction. You can see the end result here.

I've never heard that - maybe it does. However, I don't have a ball that is .505"

This is the same method I used to replace the bearings on my LE mogul in 2015, and that locomotive has run hundreds of miles (actual, not scale) since then with no issue.

I reamed the Oilite rod bushings on my Ten Wheeler 15 years ago.
Careful inspection under magnification showed that oil holes survived the reaming process.
Those bushings are still looking new 550 miles later.

using a sharp boring bar would do the job opening up the oilite bearing
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

I would say that a dull reamer could roll material into the pores of the oil lite bearing, but a sharp one should cut with no adverse affects.

Wow- time flies! It has been several months since the last update. Progress definitely slowed down: SVLS pumpkin train, Fall Meet, International Railfair, trip to Bitter Creek & Western Railroad, SVLS Santa Train - you get the idea. The first picture is when took our frames out to the club during the pumpkin train for show & tell.

John came over to my house in early November and we continued work on the frames, mostly working on the where the cylinders will attach.

My time working on the project through the holidays was almost non-existent. However, John continued to make progress as seen here.

There was interest expressed earlier with John's method for machining a radius end. Here is a video of John to further illustrate.

In addition, I put the boiler on the frame to get a look at what we have so far.

Whamo! Just like that... Love that technique for machining the radius on the end.
