Angry ANGUS

Post by rwmorris »

Hey Gang,

After horse trading my way thru several 3/4” scale projects I finally settled in on Charlie Purinton’s ANGUS. I spent lots of time studying Jay Monty’s locomotive and peppering him with questions before ordering the beautiful little castings from Friends Models. I really wanted a locomotive that was a bit more portable than my Conventry Pacific and this seemed to fit the bill nicely. I’ll post up pics as I go along to hopefully show how simple and neat this little engine really is!

LONG LIVE 3.5” Gauge!!!

Starting with a key piece.... A brand new boiler that’s just a touch on the large side. This is where ANGRY ANGUS is born! I decided to make the most of this beautiful steel boiler and upsize the locomotive a little. John K was kind enough to sell me the various front end castings from the Langworthy Hudson to help complete the look.

Several hours sifting thru the drawings and drafting up everything I could possibly think of for the water jet cutter.... 1/16”, 1/8”, 1/4”, & 3/8” thickness cut files plus about $450 and Whamo!!!! Lots of parts....

I changed things up in the hind quarters by using LBSC’s trailing truck from the Britannia. I felt like the ANGRY version could use a touch more heft down below. ;-)

Zipped right along last night on these but there’s still plenty of detail work left for the mill before they’re done.

More news soon...

I wasn’t really happy with the surface finish for the bores so I carefully reset the cylinders in the 4-jaw tonight and cleaned them up. Very nerve racking operation given the amount of tolerance I had left to work with! After that was done I trued up both end faces and everything is now within 0.0005” of each other and happy. Next will be finishing off the exterior surfaces and then drilling bolt holes and ports. Time for some rest...

A little profile work on the outside surface of the cylinders. Tread lightly on this operation! Just enough to clean things up....
