Converting a Allen models Chloe 0-4-2 to a 2-4-0

Post by skyloop440 »

Has anyone out there converted or built a 2-4-0 out of a Chloe, and if so how did you do it. Did you make a new frame or just stretch the original front frame section. I find myself owning two Chloe's and my like to convert one,any ideas would be very helpful.

You'd need to make another frame so that the lead truck can be mounted and have room to move around under there. There's not enough room for the lead truck under the standard Chloe frame. If your chloe has the aluminum frame, then you'd be better off making a new one out of steel anyway instead of trying to modify it. You'll also have to extend it in the back so that the boiler will have somewhere to mount, along with the cab, etc... It has been done by someone before, I have seen pictures, but not sure exactly what they did.

If you have TWO 0-4-2 chloes, why not make a 2-4-4-2 simple articulated??!!?? That would be pretty cool, and I don't think I've ever seen one made using those castings. Of course if you already have the boiler and everything else, then you probably wouldn't want to go through the trouble.

Here you go, there's a prototype for just about everything! If Pontiacguy's 2-10-0 was built from an 0-4-0, then this wouldn't be too much of a "stretch"! (And you could keep one of the trailing trucks!) :D

The surviving Baldwin 2-4-4-2 Mallet just completed a 15 -year restoration and is running again, in Garibaldi, Oregon!!!
It lay in pieces since about 1955. It might be the Most Unlikely Restoration of the century!

It is funny that you say this because after I got the second Chloe a friend of mine said I should bolt them together and make a 0-4-2-2-4-0 or something like that, I even found a picture of a loco down in Mexico or South American that was two 2-4-0's bolted back to back with a comin cab in the middle and two boilers, will see. I did draw up a frame in cad and will see what mods I need to make up front to make it work, the rear section would be replaced with a box around the firebox and then a draw bar just long enough to mount the cab floor on, the problem is making the frames identical to the original so all the drive train will work, my not be as bad as I think but it could be a challenge.

Here's a vid of the restored SKOOKUM 2-4-4-2 mallet.

Think double Chloe, plus LOTS of work?
Enjoy.

If you build it into a cab forward it will be a 2-4-0 :D or drive it in reverse

In the old Allen models catalog, I believe there was a picture of a 2-4-0 using Chloe parts, so it can be done.

Yes there was, pretty nice looking loco to, I believe it said built by Alan Cole of Oregon. I drew up the frame in cad and the modification to the front of the frame is really miner after all, and it would only be about 2" longer from the cylinder center line to the pilot beam. A new frame would be ideal but the aluminum frame could be modified very easy and since I have a spare one it is going to become a test bed. The rear frame is straight forward, it will have to be made but easy enough to do. I don't really want three of these things so will see were it goes.

The Fitchburg northern has a front pilot truck and uses Chloe parts. You could use the plans for that and remove an axle.

This Gentlemen's web page has some good photos of the Fitchburg chassis and can offer some insight to the relationship of the front frame extension and lead truck. The frame extension really consists of 2 bars that bolt to the top of the cylinders and extend forward. This would replace that small front shelf area that's currently cast into the Chloe frames.

And here's a few more pics from John Payne's Fitchburg that should show the front section a little better.

Cheers,
