2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build

Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
1 week turned into 3 out of the shop but made some progress the last 2 days.
Facing front of cylinders
Recessed a 3/8" plate 1/4"into block for the front truck pin
This will allow room for spacers

Back on front truck pivot. Drilled and tapped for 3/4 -16

Turned and threaded. Screwed together and weld . Jim

Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Oh I mentioned spacers possible earlier but with 3/8 plate I could take off 1/8 maybe 3/16 if needed.

Re: 2 1/2" scale 4-6-0 build
Used a 2 flute 7/16 mill plunged 3/8. Tapped 1/4 NPT.
Drilled passage at 15 degrees. I based all lengths from faced head side.
This has got me thinking about drain cocks and
Greg's stacked cheeseburger snifter valves.

Hmmm. Out of curiosity, did you use a standard length pipe tap? If so, it's likely that the required fitting won't engage much, if at all. Rule of thumb with a pipe tap is to tap within five threads of the shank end of the tap, which requires a much deeper hole than you provided.
I usually fit the piece I intend to install to ensure that the fit is correct. I do not own pipe thread gauges.

Hi Harold, after mowing late afternoon I popped in the shop and tapped the holes and did not have a chance to test. According to Winton Brown engineering data page 36 1/4 NPT needs 3/8 deep to be tight. If I have to I will grind an old tap (if I don't already have one) and enlarge the threads.

I have several pipe taps with the end threads ground off to act as Bottoming Taps.
They have worked as anticipated.

The front subframe dropped in with no issues. This is all done old school by dials and backlash I have never owned a dro. At times I sure would like one though.

Machined the shoulder where the top frame clamps the cylinders down. I'm working on a quick and dirty fixture to hold it down to do the critical stuff.

It was time to check the fit in the frame and the front truck. Then some encouragement shots.
