You have now asked my second question. What works? What are you using for actual brake banding?

I seem to remember someone mentioning thin conveyor
belt material. Has to be around here somewhere. Maybe Nelson Reidel? Might check his website on the Shay and Heisler builds.

Trying to get back to the Rust Bucket. The Boiler tube is going to school with me next week. I am taking a night welding course at the local Community College and the instructors have offered to let me use their very large band saw to cut the boiler tube. The tube is 10.75 so my saw will not touch it. The plan is to cut the main, 40" tube and a short section for the smoke box.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
I am back to working on the project again.
New things going on at work so it looks like my travel is coming to an end.
Current efforts are on fitting the coupler which will be mounted so that it can move in an arc to help with the frame swing in tight radius curves
For this reason I have notched out the rear of the frame piece.
The coupler is a 2.5 inch scale casting from RMI

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
For my tender brakes, I used brake lining strips 6224K344 from McMaster-Carr. This is 0.187" thick and 1.75" wide. The width matches the length of my metal brakeshoes, but other widths and thicknesses are available. I cut the pads from the strip and glued them to the shoes with JB Weld, applying the brakes to clamp everything together. Use wax paper between the pads and wheels to be certain they aren't glued together too!Pipescs wrote:You have now asked my second question. What works? What are you using for actual brake banding?

Well I am still alive out here.
This is a commitment note that I am trying to get back into the Lyn project. Last Daughter is off in college and I am now working a job with no travel.
Trying to drag the project out of the corner and start working some small projects on it.

I'd taken note of your absence. Good to see you're back, with a promise of regular visits.

Thanks Harold
Like most of us in this hobby I find I have too many things going on in life and get distracted.
I have been doing too many side projects and my work was seriously getting in the way.
The kids are off in college now and my work has changed to the point I have no travel.
While I still do have one other project ongoing, I did pull out the Rust Bucket and start cleaning it off to work on. I think I will be cleaning it this week, with the idea that I will be running it on air just to motivate myself. Just before I had quit working on it, Pontiac Guy and I did a test tow at Mid South. This proved the front truck was not going to work without some serious redesign of the suspension. At this point the engine became a 0-4-4 project and it tracks perfectly around the 40 foot radius curves.
While I was on my break I took two semesters at my local Tech School on the Lathe and Milling Machine. During these classes I had to make the school projects but was also allowed to make other projects. I was able to make a repair part for my Jet Lathe and I started the pilot beam for the new short nosed Rust Bucket.
This weekend I took the parts I made in class and started their matting. The holes in the frame beam needed to be transferred to the pilot beam and then drilled and tapped. I have seven of the ten done. The holes are blind in the pilot beam so they will not show from the front.
The pilot beam is one inch thick and the frame spreader is a piece of 2x2. My logic in the heavy parts is one of adding weight for traction. My suspension is equalized put has no springs. With all my weight riding over the rear truck, I am adding weight forward of the drivers.
The plan is to start at the nose and work thru to the rear of the engine making sure I fix any issues before starting on the boiler project.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
Back at it.
Today I worked on the front end and then a little on the brake ring turning.
The work at the front was to cut and mount the shorter decking plate. Still not sure how this will look when I finish. Paint orange pealed so I will be sanding it back down for another attempt. Not enough cleaning in the paint shop.
The brake ring is one I cast here at the house over a year ago. It was made from scraps. The idea is to use J.B. Weld to mount brake banding to it.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
Question of the Day
Does anyone have experience with mounting brake banding to the brake ring casting while it is still in the lathe? I spoke with Earl Mueller on the subject years ago. I believe he said he turned the inside face flat and after gluing in the banding with J.B. Weld, he turned the face of the banding to a two degree bevel.
Experienced help greatly appreciated at this point

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
My vague recollection of the days when any decent automotive machine shop could rivet on new brake material in house is that they ground the surface with a sanding drum. A Dremal mounted to the tool post with a little sanding drum would probably work.
Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
I just remembered I have a tool post grinder that I may be able to use. Thanks
