Herreshoff Marine Museum

Post by lfisher »

Located on Burnside Street, The Herreshoff Marine Museum is housed in the original Herreshoff Mfg. Co. buildings. The museum also operates a restored portion of the company’s waterfront facilities. Capt. Nathaniel Herreshoff and his brother John built the most advanced power boats and sailing yachts of their time, including numerous successful defenders of the America’s Cup. Capt. Nat’s entire Body of design work is housed here in the library and half hull model collection. In addition, his revolutionary designs for stationary and marine steam engines are noteworthy, not the least of which is his rotary valve developed for the nearby Corliss Mfg. Co. where he was employed before returning to the marine business full time. This museum is a must see when you visit Bristol RI!
