19” ga RR Crane

Post by Glenn Brooks »

EDIT: got tired of crummy dark photos from my iPhone. So found a free photo editing app called “Snapseed” from google. It adjusts color density, brightness, and hue, plus a dozen other options. Very happy with it. I was able to actually lighten these interior shots of the Swanton RR “Derrick”, so one can actually see some detail. Here are the newly edited versions below. Hopefully better photos.

Got a chance to look over the Swanton Pacific RR shop made railway crane this week. Credit goes to SPRR GM (retired) and former (and also retired) Cal Poly Engineering professor Ed Carnegie for designing and overseeing the building of this remarkable MOW equipment. Cal Poly engineering students accomplished all the work to build the crane.

Swanton Pacific RR is a non profit, 19”gauge RR maintained in perpetuity on the 3000 acre CAl Poly Swanton Pacific ranch, 10 miles north of Santa Cruz, near Davenport, Ca, under terms of an endowment and gift provided by the late Al Smith, founder of Orchard Supply Hardware chain. The RR motive power includes the entire collection of 1/3rd scale restored steam engines from the 1915 San Francisco Pan Pacific Exposition.

Nice-looking derrick (it's not a "crane" ☻).
