Bow Hill RR

Post by Glenn Brooks »

Visited the Bow Hill RR today, just a few miles south of Bellingham, Wa. Motive power is a 24” gauge, immaculately restored Porter, 0-4-0 loco, with new code boiler and new good as new tender. The owner will be putting the RR up for sale in the next year or two, as he and his wife get ready to downsize and retire. The loco started out life in 1896 as a compressed air, 18” gauge hard rock mine engine, bring ore to the surface for transshipment to a smelter for refining. Then in the 1930’s or ‘40’s it got converted to steam and ran for another 15 or 20 years as a tank engine in the the lumber industry.

The current owner bought it in 1985 and rebuilt the loco from the frame up, renewing all the machined surfaces, and moving parts, replacing all brass and bearings, built a tender and finally replaced the boiler with a new build in 2004. He used to run it around his 7 acre spread, giving rides to neighbor kids as a Santa Train, and annually hosting a food bank drive and SPCA feed drive for rescued farm animals- horses, dogs, cats, whatever turned up.

Walking into his car she is like walking into an engine shed in 1899. If anyone is looking for a new, 1896 Porter steam locomotive- here it is!

Once again the forum won’t load the photos. This is really becoming a problem.

Maybe tomorrow it will work properly.

That's a big one! Something placed over the tracks inside? It looks like the tracks stop at the concrete lol

Yes, couple of sheets of painted sheet metal, maybe a sheet of plywood by the door.

The tracks outside the building are actually a mural, Painted on the doors.

Looks more like enlarged photos to me.
You can see the panel lines.
Great effect, regardless.

May actually be a digital decal of some sort. In any event it’s a great backdrop to the Porter.
