Utah visit

Hi all,

We will be visiting our daughter and family In Park City Utah for Christmas and New Year. Just wondering if there is any Live Steam activity in the Park City / Salt Lake City area.

Not live steam, but there is the full-size Heber Creeper in Heber Valley http://hebervalleyrr.org/ and the Utah State Railroad Museum is in the railroad station in Ogden. There is or was a 12-inch gauge (?) railroad near Wasatch Mountain State Park. I don't know anything about it but someone here must.

You could drive over to Promontory Point, Utah and see the Jupiter and 119 locomotives. Between October and May they don't fire them up, but you can take an engine house tour.

At the Union Station in Ogden along with the trains there is also the Browning Firearms Museum.
I have been there several times and is really worth visiting.

I would be very interested in any info you might discover about the the 12" ga RR near the Wasatch State Park. I am exploring building a 12" steam locomotive and would love to talk to someone in the northwest that has worked in 12" gauge.

I saw the track just down the road from Wasatch Mountain State Park some years ago. I couldn't stop because of the SWMBO. I think I still see the right of way on a Google satellite view, but I'm not positive. I think it's where Homestead Drive makes a turn to the west and becomes Snake Creek Drive. However, the largest view looks like the track may have been pulled out. It's a dogbone outline running north and south:

Well normally I'd say "not true!" about the engines not running just after xmas, but this year they are not running steam during the winter break. It's too bad as its a real treat. Typically they will run the engine that they are not working on, but it sounds like both need some major maintenance this winter. These are pictures from last year.

Regarding Heber, they don't have any working steam power right now. The 618 is undergoing a major overhaul and the 75 is a long term project.

Ogden Union Station has a very nice railroad museum and auto museum in it, as well as the building itself which is a treasure.
They have some very nicely maintained locomotives on display outside under an awning including #833, a cousin to UP #844.

Also, if you walk out back on the platform you will find a D&RG C-16 undergoing restoration. (they are restoring the tender first)

Definitely worth your visit and easy to get to, plus a lot of nice shopping and eating across the street downtown. They should be open except for Christmas Day.
