Redneck boiler
Redneck boiler
Here is Tristian, one of our group, showing off his Shay. Ingenious, I thought. Tristian is doing a nice job on this and it is his first engine and first machining project.

Re: Redneck boiler
Kind of gives a new perspective to "I've got it running on air"
Re: Redneck boiler
Awesome! Internal combustion engine creates mechanical energy, which becomes electrical energy in the generator, then back to mechanical energy in the compressor motor, then into a compressed superheated gas (air) and finally back to mechanics energy in the Shay! I wonder what the overall efficiency of this system is?

Re: Redneck boiler
efficiency is about as high as burning coal in a boiler to create steam.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

yes, I remember seeing that one in person.

If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

Re: Redneck boiler
Is cylinder lubrication an issue when running on air like this? Timmy

Re: Redneck boiler
depends on the air compressor...giggle...
yes, lubrication is always a concern and can be handled many different ways..the simplest of which is to use an air-line lubricator

Re: Redneck boiler
Would you use tool oil or would steam oil (without the steam) still work?

I though the need to know this information decreased exponentially as the level of fun increased. I'd say that the level of fun is way up there!Fender wrote:I wonder what the overall efficiency of this system is?
