American Model Engineering Shutting Down

Post by jpeach1 »

Hello,

I called American Model Engineering Supply this morning to order 8-32 Hex Head Bolts and received the message that they are in the process of closing.
Seems very unfortunate for them as the message indicated they were closing for medical reasons, but also live steamers.
Does anyone have a source for 8-32 Hex Head bolts in 1" - 1 1/2" long? Either steel or Stainless?

Thanks,

Jim

McMaster-Carr carries stainless steel hex head machine screws. They won't be as nice as the scale ones from AMES, they made their own O an old automatic screw machine.
It's unfortunate that they shut down, they're nice people with some nice products. Hopefully somebody will pick up the business soon and keep it going.

Jim...two places I've had great success with for small fasteners (stainless in particular) are: albanycountryfasterner and microfastener. Believe both places are in NJ. If you're going to check out ACF...look for "trim fasteners". Otherwise, you'll only find stuff 1/4" and up. Hope that helps. Carl B.

Tristan, Carl,

Thanks for the quick reply. Needed these for frame assembly. I placed an order with alban. I'll post a picture of the screw head detail when I receive.
Like Tristan elluded to in his reply, the message on American Model Engineering voice mail indicated they were interested in selling the business if anyone is interested.
Kindly,

Jim

On the topic of small hex-head fasteners, let me point out the scheme that Tom Artzberger uses in his locomotive kits: metric screws. M4x0.7 is very close to 8-32, M5x0.8 is very close to 10-32, and going smaller M3.5x0.6 is very close to 6-40. The advantage of the metric fastener is that hex-head screws are a standard product, not a hobbyist specialty, and the prices reflect this. Of course you have to get the metric taps and use them from the beginning. Everything else can be dimensioned in inches. I had worked on the RGS 20 kit for several months before I realized why Tom was using metric threads.
For a comparison of dimensions, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_d ... _tap_sizes

Has anyone heard who purchased American Model Engineering? And when they will be taking orders?

Thanks

I've spoke to the new owner and he told me that there should be an announcement in the next few days. They are planning to begin taking orders soon.
