If you find that the output from the generator has a wide range, you may consider the adjustable variable input supplies as a help. The new switching type (or something real similar) have very little loss and I've seen input ranging from 2 to 30 V and able to give a stable output. I've seen a number of them in locos so they get a 12V for accessories while their main battery packs are 24. It saves the wiring and issue of unbalanced load on the batteries.
Where I"m thinking it might be handy is when idle it might still generate enough to recharge the accessories while also dealing with the surges when at full pressure.
