yes...there are charts that show engagement / cutting length for NPT threads.

assuming that you do not have an 'adjustable' die -> these are good numbers with which to work and get expected dimensions
If you are threading the fitting (female) and cutting the mail with a die, then these numbers may not be totally accurate (depending on the depth to which you are pushing the tap into the fitting).

Hi Bill,
I was fitting the male part of the thread, which I incorrectly called out as female. I was able to chop off about the first third of the male thread and add a few more with the pipe threader and the elbow wound up in the right place.

that is how most of us learn to fit (fight?) threaded pipe....giggle
