Steam Launch Engine

Post by Mountaineer »

Slightly off topic from most of the posts regarding trains so I hope this is ok...

Has anyone made the York compound twin steam launch engine from Elliot Bay. Opinions? Problems with the design or castings? I see their website is up but no response this far from emails- still in business? (Perhaps on summer vacation?) Thanks.

Mountaineer:
Try contacting
http://www.northweststeamsociety.org
They are highly active in the Salish Sea region, including into Canada, eh.
I'm sure you'll find answers there to your questions on the Elliot Bay launch engine.

A surprising (or not...) number of my Fellow Kitsap Live Steamers Friends also build/operate small steam launches, and are active in the NW Steam Society.

Mountaineer,

I'm currently building a York. The design is sound and there are a few currently in boats around the world. Castings were very good with no voids. Only complaint would be a small number had very thin machining allowances. The prints have a few errors, mostly mating hole sizes.

I think Pat is still in business but I think he is not paying as much attention to the business (Like most of these it's more of a hobby than a business and life gets in the way, keep trying, he usually gets back in a few weeks)

The most active forum for Steam boaters is http://www.thesteamboatingforum.net

I have a thread on the York build here http://www.thesteamboatingforum.net/for ... &view=next but most of the pics were hosted on photobucket and we know what happened there.

Here is a video of one in eastern usa https://youtu.be/ovRE12ohlOo

Cheers
