That was quite an event here, in 1988.
I was not there, but the RR Fans were pretty stirred up about it.
Really amazing that the BN decided to use the 1070. They were so anti-steam then.

I was surprised at that myself. But then again, this subdivision exports lumber, grain, molasses, propane, garbage, and frozen berries/fish. I would imagine there was some goods within the "trapped" freight cars that needed to move, so the decision was made to allow #1070 to do it.

Bumping my old post. I am still drawing parts for this 0-6-0 in 12" gage(2" scale) as I have a few minutes here and there, what would I want to do/use for the "petticoat" for this?
I pretty much have the linkage figured out, and looking at a 2-3/4" bore, 5-1/4" stroke inside 6" long cylinders.

When you say “draw,” is this pencil and paper? CAD? Modifying an existing scaled drawing?

Just curious really.

I'm drawing the parts in AutoCAD LT for a "someday" build that will be mostly laser cut and fabricated plate, and pipe of course.

Ryan keep your drawings handy! I'm needing a complete 12" gauge 0-6-0 frame, wheels, cylinders and side rods. While I like to stay true to prototypical railroad equipment, the past couple of years I've been toying with the idea of building an 0-6-0 outline based on "Smokey" from the Bill Pete children's book. I can remember that book from my childhood. Thought it would be a great addition for the pumpkin patch railroad. Lol! My wife has even painted a photo prop in honor of Old Smokey.

In reality it would look more like a UP 0-6-0
With a slope back tender. The Rio Grande had at least 3 0-6-0s, but I haven’t found good photos of them yet.

I did a google image search and found a bunch of pictures online, I'll post them up this week. That's correct Curtiss, it's the same locomotive with the exception of that forward wheelset being evenly spaced where many of the NP 0-6-0's had it further forward, and the various tenders and fuel sources they used. LWRR's 0-6-0 was converted and has a unique tender from what I've seen.
CAD drawings are of course easily scalable, so that's no problem.

Curtiss, if I was building a narrow gage steamer I would build a K36. I like the unique factor of the drivers being inside the frame yet the counterweights and linkage on the outside. Also, I think they look great with those big snowplows on them:) In 3" scale one would be huge though, would bet it would have to be several tons.

Ryan, as awesome as a 3” scale K36 would be, it would definitely weigh tons, break my back and bank!
I believe that Tom Miller’s ex- 2.5” scale k36 weighed in at 2000lbs! In 2014 I had the opportunity to ride behind the C&T #489.
I have a great fondness for the K-27s and C-19s also.
However if I get the opportunity, due to size, cost and track radius, I’ll probably build a outline of something with a shorter wheel base like the RGS 2-6-0 #9. Ute Pass RR in Durango has a couple of decent looking 2.5” scale electric outlines built on RMI chassis’s. It’s possible if time and money allows. Hence I’m starting with a narrow gauge diesel first to get my feet wet.

D&RGW's steam fleet (and then some) is well documented and there is tons of drawings online some with a lot of dimensions and some in CAD format.
My thought was that with the counterweights being separate from the wheels it really opens the frames, wheels., counterweights, and most of the other parts except the boiler pipe and flues obviously could be laser cut and formed/rolled as needed.
