Injector steam out

Post by jlakes85 »

Hi all,

The feedwater lines on my shay are 1/4 not. The injectors I'm using are for 5/16 od tubing. I got 5/16 to 1/4 steam rated compression fitting adapters from McMaster. Is there any issue with the feedwater output going from the smaller 5/16 tubing to the 1/4 pipe?

Thanks,

no issues, it would be no different then throttling the water done with ha valve, suction lines just need to be bubble tight
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

I have found that 1/4" works but 5/16 will allow a higher feed rate. Your choice.

If possible keep the feed water input at the higher value. If you can do the steam input at the 5/16 that would be better also.

Just for the record Brass 5/16 tube has an ID of .285 and 1/4" sch 40 pipe ID is .364
Injectors work best with the path of least resistance i.e. no curves or restrictions.
The inlet should also have a path with no restrictions and no air leaks.

if you are using copper tubing with actual 1/4" and 5/16"o.d., there is a cheap way to join 1/4" copper tube to 5/16". take a quarter inch reamer and introduce it into the larger tubing. ream for an inch or so. the smaller tubing should slide into the bigger tubing. you may have to sand a bit on the smaller tubing. when it slips together, you can then flux the joint and silver solder it together. would not recommend the use of lead or tin solder.
