Has anyone found a good way to tighten close pipe nipples, without having to use pliers, and tear up the threads

I have always tightened them during final assembly with the mated fitting

Hello, Tap the same thread in a bushing and split one side. Clamp in a 3 jaw to tighten and then loosen chuck to remove bushing.

An "internal pipe wrench" with its knurled eccentric cam will tighten or loosen the closest of nipples.

I make a miniature analogous tool that fits into 1/4" phone jack to allow tightening the retaining nut from the outside of an electric guitar:
