In search of tender wheel castings

Post by Bill Shields »

for 1" tender (need 8)

Tread to finish to 2.5" (approx) diameter, .5" wide tread.

Have not given up looking, but when I cannot find them in the the UK (tried Reeves and Blackgates Eng'g), figured that I would ask 'the crowd'.

Reeves has wheels that will finish to 3/8" wide tread, but I want something just a bit wider, so am hesitant to purchase / ship if they won't clean up.

Yes, I have tried John at Friends'..

anybody got any ideas?

No..I am not into getting patterns cast...looking for something that i can stick in the lathe...

couldn't you just grab some steel round stock and whittle out a few?? Or just like the cast finish in specific areas?

Or, if you like cast iron, McMaster sells nice cast iron billet. You would need a band saw to slice it up first. Would be easier machining than steel. Per wheel, if it is sliced into discs, it's not that expensive.

guys...sorry....

I am looking for SPOKED wheels.

I have more than enough stock, cast blanks etc: to make solid discs...it just isn't what I am looking for in this project.

How about putting a wider steel tire on a Reeves spoked wheel center? Speedy metals has DOM tubing that can be ordered by the inch. They have 3.0” O.D. DOM tubing with various wall thicknesses between 0.25” to 0.75”.
