I just discovered that what we might call a "Mini Hitch-Pin Clip" is know in the world of Remote Control (RC) cars as a "RC Body Clip." A quick Google search found many vendors selling 50 pins for about $5 or 100 for about $10. They seem to range from 3/4" to about 1-1/2" long, with wire sizes from about .040" to .060".
They sell by Car type, but any of us could easily figure out what is useful... Some seem to be bent, some flat.
Yeah, we could all make them, but for 10 cents each? Kimball

Kimball...another name for those is "R" clips, hairpin clips or hairpin cotter clips. McMaster Carr seems to have a good size selection and in various materials such as zinc plated spring steel and stainless. Personally prefer the clips that have to go thru a hole and not held in place in a slot. Good for locomotives...use clips on turnout switch throw mechanisms. Allows for easy servicing. Just sayin'...
