Drawing advice

Post by pollockmarine »

Hi guys and gals,

I have purchased the NYC DVD for the 0-8-0 U3 as will I'm at sea have taken on the project of building a Martin Evan's caribou but it lacks the details I'm after, I'm after 2 more drawings to satisfy my needs which are not in the NYC drawings.

1. Cylinder casting drawing or GA
2. Frame drawings

There are erection card drawings but nothing specific on the above

To date I have been busy designing stuff for casting as attached.

Thank you in advance
Brendan

Can't help the drawing request, but maybe some of my Canadian friends remember Gerry Penrose ( Pen's Models-Oakville, Ont)
He redrew the Caribou and got into some heat with Martin Evans . I mention it because I do not recall if Gerry's prints were published which might help the poster ? I think it may have been a Magazine article in the late 60's - Met Gerry in 72

Well, It's coming back .
When Gerry revised the drawings, he called it "Buffalo" or "Beaver" ..since it was North American Continent based
So Here is a start...but the price is ridiculas as I saw one of these books for $10 at Cabin Fever a few years ago
https://www.amazon.com/0-8-0-Canadian-S ... oks&sr=1-1

So maybe the Buffalo or "Beaver" (?) drawings are available ?

Gerry Penrose's drawings were published in Live Steam mag in the mid 1970's. Unfortunately, he did copy Martin Evan's design, dropping one driver, including Martin's mistakes. Martin Evan's had a habit of doing an approximation of the prototype- if you are using NYC drawings you may be better off doing your own design. Having said that, I did enjoy many miles running a friend's Caribou years ago and it was a great runner!

Agree there are not enough people in the hobby. Makes designers who have produced incredible designs such as Don Young, Jim Krieder, Kozo Hiroaka all the more remarkable, just to name a few.

If the Caribou book and drawings are what you are looking for, I have a set that I could part with (If I can find them).

Try the NYC Historical Society, or look in a Loco Cyclopidia.
