Very cool. I have dreamed of building a 1/8th scale 2-4-4-2. Good to see this one steaming again.

This May I got to experience the culmination of a decades' work restoring a surviving prototype Baldwin 2-4-4-2, in Garibaldi, Oregon.
I first met this locomotive as a pile of parts and a boiler, at Snoqualmie, WA, in 1972.
We NEVER thought it would steam again! That was on my bucket list.
Dreams can come true.

Hey Russ, I agree that a 2-4-4-2 would be great in 1/8 scale. I was thinking the running gear 2 Allen Chloe could be used for a freelanced "kit bash".

Good idea.
All four cylinder could be the same bore, with the forward two wrapped to larger outside diameter to simulate the compound cylinders.
I would not expect a true compound locomotive to work well in this scale, especially with the saturated steam of the original. Why they failed.

Use little engines or RRSC 0-4-0 parts that way you have piston valves and outside VG.

The skookum is an amazing save . I bought the restoration book that Roots of motive power put out . A good friend Of mine Skip who owns saginaw timber number 2 has his engine out on the coast and ran with the Skookum . I worked on The 2 when it was here in wisconsin and ran it and fired it back in the day . I really miss those times

I know of at least two 2-4-4-2s in 1.5" scale were built. Also there was a lady engineer in So. Cal. that started one using a pair of RRSC 0-4-0 chassis as a base. I don't know what happened to any of these engines.

Thanks for posting! Great video, of a very interesting loco. This seems to be a large loco- looks to be as large as my 12” gauge Ottaway. Very impressive! Noticed like quite a bit of blow buy, from the packing glads in several of the shots. I wonder if this is normal for a Mallet? Or did they just need a bit of tightening...?

Skookum was built by Don Marshall, Woodstock, VT. This was a true compound and I had operated it many times when he was alive. I do know who has it, but it hasn't run in a few years. It even rolled over on its side once just like the full size one did. And what angered Don about that, is nobody got a picture of it!

The packing blow-by is not normal. It indicates adjustments needed.

That is pretty amazing about the model rolling over like the prototype!
What a missed photo op that was!!
Hopefully that beautiful loco will be seen steaming again soon.

My Dad is tied in to the steam locomotive world . He rebuilds pops for diversified rail and other people . He has told me they are having problems with the skookum . Valve gear on the front low PSI cylinders is locking up on them . From what my dad has told them they are not getting a large enough load to pull and this is starving the low psi cylinders of hydrostatic oil which is carried to the low pressure by the steam from the high pressure cylinders. The roots of motive power book final chapter show the damage from this happening
