Need source for graphited yarn for packing

Post by doublereefed »

I need to pack the tender pump and axle pump on my Allen Mogul. I'm used to fiber type yarn with graphite... but I'm seeing this graphite yarn that seems to just be all graphite?

https://www.google.com/search?q=graphit ... t81l4jSF9M:

I don't know if it is best practice, but I would load the graphited yarn with steam oil by submerging the yarn and working the oil into the yarn and then use that to pack glands. Wondering what best practice is these days. As you can tell it has been a long time since I have done this, and I also don't have that graphited yarn anymore.

Thanks!

Lot's of suppliers for full size practice with a quick Google search. I didn't search for how small they go. A bit far for shipping but? https://www.ajreeves.com/search/for/graphite/

I noticed these folks have it down to 1/8" stock - graphite on fiberglass. Probably still too big though

These folks have 1/8" in flax.

I have a couple of boxes of the graphited string which may be asbestos since it is so old. It is the traditional stuff. Not worth as much for packing as the pure graphite tape which you can roll into a rope and wrap around a shaft. See McMaster 9481K11 for what we use at GGLS mostly. That said, if you were to appear at the GGLS fall meet, I could give you the other stuff which is about 1/4" in diameter, but you unwind it into strings of about 1/16" or less. But as far as I'm concerned it isn't worth the cost of mailing and may be hazardous so I won't.

Check around at any marine chandlery stores near you. You might find square graphite packing close at hand. It’s used quite routinely to pack prop shaft glands in sailboats and fishing boats.

jkimberin - that's the stuff I remember. I will take a look at the McMaster part... thanks much for the pointer.

And thanks all for the tips and pointers. I will check it all out.

Can this type of square packing be "unthreaded"... can individual strands be pulled from the packing? I need a round yarn.

Or just twist this tape into a strand?

Use 1/2" for that, or?
