Bagley burner install

Post by Emfinger »

Hello, my 2-4-2 1.5" scale loco was purchased without a burner installed. There is a round tower in the center of the fire box with a spark plug pointing up, for re-lighting I guess. The only openings to mount the burner are in the bottom front of the fire box. I have found very little info. about aiming the burner. Most of the info. seems to be for converting to oil from coal. And they aim the burner from back to front along the fire pan. What info. I have found say point the flame at the top of the crown ???? help !
Thank you
Tom

The burner should be installed at the front of the firing pan. It should be aimed to hit the door sheet (back firebox sheet) below the fire door. This area should have firebrick or refractory cement. The firing pan should be covered for the front 2/3.

When the burner is installed as Marty has described, draft from the blower will then pull the flames into a U shape back to the tubes. This maximizes heat transfer to the sheets of the firebox.

That's just a lazy and inattentive engineer's way to re-light their fire after they've sucked it out. Personally, I'd remove it but it doesn't affect what Marty said about the burner position.

The IBLS website has the proper documentation written by Dick Bagley himself regarding installation of his Sheedy style oil /atomizer burner. Search for "Bagley oil burner" on the IBLS websight. Link pasted below.

suggest addition of adjectives: 'practical and safe' to the description of relight methods
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I don't know Bill about the 'safe', seems like the right thing to do would be to stop, let a little blower clear things, and then relight with a wick. Strictly my opinion based on mistakes I have made. But practical, yeah, I'll give that.
