Mad notions

Post by Lovesthedrive » Tue Feb 11, 2020 9:13 pm

It has been a while since I last posted. Pardon any double key strokes I miss in editing, my hands have tremors now (makes stickwelding fun!).

So I saw on a friends page on FaceBook that some one had made a Clishay gocart. Alas it wasnt a very good job as the heat from the boiler would burn the drive tires.

That being said and done. I am thinking of making one of sorts with some exceptions. I am thinking of making it like I did back in 1985 as a 30" long 0-4-0. Basically just a boiler and engine with some form of a riding car that brought the water and fuel. The mad notion part is to make the locomotive part removable should I want to operate it on a track. IE have the frame be bolted to a sub frame. Then if I want to operate it at a steam club. I would drop the sub frame and put the axles in and off I go to have some fun on tracks.

I would like your feed back on this mad notion of mine. Granted I cant start on the clishay gocart until I get my MF 40 industrial tractor with a bad crankshaft rebuilt.

I did some further reading about the creation some one did. It was created in Quebec. The blow out was not from heat. It was from overloading. Here are the pictures of some one esles design.

Couldn't you just build it with a gear on one of the axles between the rail wheels and have the chassis sit/bolt down so that gear would mesh with the rubber tired frame? Simply unbolt 4 bolts and lift off the frame and place on the rails. Perhaps even the same gear that comes off the engine drive?

I could do that indeed. It is why I posed the question here. To look for ideas. Thankyou.

Using that same notion, couldn't a sub chassis of this sort with rollers like you would use in running in the shop be fashioned except one pair of rollers off the drivers would belt drive the chassis axel? Couldn't this apply to any locomotive so they could be driven down main street in a parade on the 4th of July?

To any locomotive a sprocket or gear would be better as there will be too much wheel slip if encountering any type of grade other than a dead flat road.

The owner sent me two more pictures of the machine. Apparently it is chan drive. Tho I am surprised that he has to lift the loco on or off. Seems like if it had some bearings one could roll it on/off.
