Sad that 'Discover Live Steam' doesn't stay a bit more up to date: https://www.discoverlivesteam.com/disco ... page2.html
Doug's ad is still there.... Did Doug have a good sense of humor?

I purchased a copy of "Civil Engineering for Outdoor Railroads Volume 2". It included the small CD-ROM disc, but it was damaged and unreadable. As with most low-end CD-ROM devices it would probably not be readable anyway due to its age.

Has anyone made a backup of the CD-ROM to disk? If so are you willing to share the contents? Otherwise I am afraid it is lost content.

Daris,

I have one. The first thing is: I'll have to find it. Second: I'll have to see if it still works. Third: I'll have to figure out how to get the info to you.

I'll see what I can do.

I had bought the first volume a while ago. But now I don't see it on Discover Live Steam any more. I also didn't know that a third volume was written. I should have got the 2nd volume after getting the first. Anyone know of where to find volumes 2 and 3?

Daris, I found it!!! The CD appears to be working but I am NOT computer savvy and don't know what to do in order to get the info to you.

Ken, I have both vol.2 & 3. I see there was a vol.2 just sold on eBay. You might keep an eye on eBay for one. There are 4 vol 1s on there right now. I know Doug was ill when doing vol. 3. The issue is much smaller than the others. I also do not know how many of them he sold. I was doing proof reading for him on all three volumes. Vol. 2 is all, and I do mean ALL, about bridges. Vol. 3 covers tunnel design, trestle, Tie Spacing (my section), truck equalization and springs. Just over 80 pages. Vol. 2 is just over 200 pages.

Daris, We MAY be in luck. My wife tried to copy the disc and it appears she has succeeded.

Wow, I'm bummed to hear I missed Vol 2 on eBay. I had an eBay watch for it, but there must have been a title mismatch.

Terry, as it sounds like no one is claiming the copyright, would it be possible to scan and distribute Vol 2 and 3? They seem to be incredibly rare, and yet would be so valuable to the hobby. I know this is a sensitive subject. I don't think anyone should profit off such a thing, but if you or anyone else were willing to do this at-cost it seems like a reasonable thing to do. Perhaps a donation could even be made in Doug's memory to an organization he cared about. What do you think?

Ben,

Thank you for the faith you have in me. I will have to do some investigating and talk to a lawyer about the legal side. Unfortunately, there may be a down side to the potential popularity of these 2 volumes. Vol.2 is particularly engineering directed. Doug stated one of his reasons for these books is for anyone to be able to SHOW any governmental representative exactly HOW the calculations were completed and exactly how much safety factor was included. Thusly, negating the representative's arguments concerning the railroad NOT being safe. Not being a Civil Engineer, proof reading Vol. 2 was a big chore. It is very technical and detail based. Vol. 3 contains much of the same technical approach directed at tunnels in the beginning of the book. I could tell Doug was having issues as about half way through the book, it was plain to see he was wandering, losing mental focus. He asked for subject matter to make the book feel complete. I submitted my Tie Spacing work for consideration. He adopted it, added the engineering information and included it in the book. While the book starts out strong, I feel it sort of ended with a whimper. These are just my feelings having proof read all 3 volumes.

I will keep your suggestion in mind and see where this goes. I do not believe there will be much of a demand as indicated by how few issues were ever sold. Let me know what you think. I appreciate any and all input. I am a "hands on" type of guy and the engineering calculating is not my cup of tea.

If I hear of a vol.2 for sale, I'll be sure to let you know.

Cheers,
Terry

If money would be a benefit of making copies, I'd feel best if it went to one of the organizations. Terry, depending on what legal standing you might track down, if there was one of the organizations that did books already, that would help point to a great depository for these works. But what of the estate etc... many legal issues might mess up the best intentions. Again, some of the organizations may know ways around this sort of issue.
