Steam regulator type:
Does the prototype loco you are modeling have a steam dome throttle/regulator or a front end (smokebox) throttle?
There are versions for both.
And are you seeking to replicate the original prototype design or make an operating model?
There exist excellent operating versions for our models.

Hi RussN,

Prototype has a steam dome, but I am not sure where the regulator was located. I am making a operating model and if it doesn't affect it visually, then I will do/make what is best practice.

What I am curious about is if the heat expansion and contraction causes issues with a steam dome mounted regulator with fasteners coming lose etc?

Ian:
My Allen Ten Wheeler (1/8th scale) has a steam dome mounted sliding throttle,
Over the 16 years I have steamed it, nothing has ever come loose, and the throttle has worked perfectly the entire time.

Location of the prototype throttle:
Smokebox throttles/regulators usually have external control linkage running the length of the boiler from the Engineer's station to the smokebox throttle rocker arm.
Usually very visible upon inspection.

1" locos typically have either disc or screw throttles inside the boiler. I hate the disc type as they are fiddly and had a problem with a Tich early in my live steam career.

Smoke box throttles in this gauge require a lot of space that just may not be available in your smoke box.

BvB had a very simple and reliable design. I use something in similar in my 1" locos based on a George Thomas throttle.

You have to design the boiler around it since it is necessary to insert from the blackhead.

You not only need space for the flange but clearance between the stays.

It may not be prototypical...but functional and reliability is higher on my list
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Thanks RussN good to know.

Bill, not sure what BvB stands for? I will have a throttle in the steam dome and the throttle shaft mounted on the backhead.

Bill van brocklin

So if you have a throttle in the dome...what is it you are seeking?

I have seen different steam dome throttle designs, just after a recommended one thanks.

So ..what are the different designs from which you are attempting to choose?
