Ask amtrak about 1000's of cracked ties
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

True in my experience.

Tie tamping machines usually have 8 tampers that are slid into the four corners of each tie/rail location, both rails.
The tie centers are not tamped. Train weight can break the tie in the tamped center, if the rail locations are not tamped.

I only tamp with the air tamper on the outside edges of the ties. all I do in the center is put mini scoops of ballast in the center of the tie and pack it down solid with my mini scoop. it's very effective and makes a big difference cuz when I stand on the track with my own body weight to see how solid everything is. it makes it more much more solid under weight. which is what im looking for.

As per my experience working on the track gang with former ATSF and SP track foremen, I only tamp the four corners around each rail. I never tamp the center tight, but I will fill the pocket loosely with ballast. The only exception to tamping the centers is under turnouts, there I was taught to always tamp the whole tie tight.
