Cleaning a small injector

Post by ChuckHackett-844 »

What is the recommended way to clean this type of injector?

I can get the check ball out but I do not see any removable steam or exit cones like I am familiar with.

... forgot to mention - I have de-scaled it but I can't see inside to see if there is any scale remaining.

On the left and right ends is a pilot section that is not threaded...these are the ends of the cones. You need to grip and pull to get them out.

Suggest a lathe collet of the correct diameter

If you cannot get them out then perhaps what remains of the injector is not worth the effort.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Ah, hadn't noted the non-threaded sections -- thanks much.

A 5C collet did the trick ... thanks!

Should be cleaned up and ready for a fun week of running the Shay at a meet all next week!

The W S stamped on the body suggests it is from Warrick Sandberg, an Australian supplier of such goodies including some awesome-looking pumps.

Chuck, are you holding out on us? Your 844 is common knowledge, but I don't remember ever hearing of a Shay.

Hi Dick,

It's in my signature line "Chuck Hackett, UP Northern 844, ... Mich-Cal Shay #2 ..." :D

The Northern is propane fired but the Shay is coal fired. In fact, today I spent an hour breaking and sifting 6" coal chunks to acceptable size for the Shay - four, 5-gallon buckets worth plus an extra bag of unbroken stuff just in case I run lots! (7-day meet).

She has a 40 gallon water car, 4 disconnect log cars, a stake pocket log car, riding car, caboose (all 2.5"/3" scale).

She was built by a member of my old Omaha club (Camp Creek Railroad, Ron Beckman) for another member (Charlie Cook) who got to old to deal with it and Charlie made me buy it from him :-D

Considering age...I would not suggest depending on the injector. Old worn scaled cones do not always make a running injector.

We will see how the injector performs after a good cleaning. Last outing it was working but a lot of overflow. She also has two axle pumps but obviously these don't help unless she is in motion.
