Friends models hudson

Post by Jordanleeds »

Recently picked up a part built friends models NYC hudson. Now being based in the UK it puts me at somewhat a disadvantage as to being able to see a complete example so if anyone has built one and could provide a few pointers and or advice of areas that may require modification . We don't know of another over here either.

I built mine 40+ years ago and have a few pictures and not too many memories but will help in any way I can

Are you sure they are Friends / Langworthy design castings and drawings?
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

It is indeed a Friends/Langworthy designed engine quite how it came to be in the UK remains a mystery . Its currently on its way up from the South Coast and when it arrives I shall post photos

Checking again the castings have Yankee cast into them which may help age them and the rear truck is bronze

75 years back they were all iron... based on what I have seen ...which is the age of the castings I used.

In reality it matters not.

Did you get a tender water bottom with the set?

I have a part-built 5"ga Maid of Kent (LBSC) and how it got here is a curious story. I also have a Myford S-7 lathe and the story of how that came to me is stranger than fiction.

The 1952-53 Yankee Shop Machinists catalog lists the following details for the Hudson:
  • Trailer truck side (Bronze) (2 required)
  • Trailer truck rear beam (Cast iron)
  • Trailer truck front beam (Bronze)
The ones available from John K. at Friends Models as of today are all Ductile iron.

But like Bill said this matters very little. No mater what the material is the Yankee Shop/Langworthy truck looks far better than the old 3/4" Little Engines trailing truck design which I must say leaves much to be desired.

The Hudson that I have that was built by Harry Hansen from New Jersey used castings that he bought from L.D. Langworthy in the 1930’s. The trailing truck frames are bronze, as is the cast tender bed.
