The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
This was the way it was with my Friend, Larry Kombrink. I was able to see him the year before he passed away and we were able to talk on the phone until he passed in his sleep at 92.
The drawing exercise continues with the gears being completed today. (I am banned from the shop as my daughter, home from college, is recovering from ankle surgery and no noise in allowed from the shop in the basement under her room.
I settled on a 16 DP gear. The hardest part of this was wading thru all the YouTube Videos on how to use the Functions in Solidworks.
I received input from a builder out west who had built the Donkey in 2.5 inch scale. As I am doing the gears from a casting, he recommended adding two more clutch shoes to the drum gears. The original design makes this easy to do.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
The gearing is all worked out and I am working onthe Drum Assemblies. There are a few more parts on the engines to work and the Drum support frames will be near the end.
When it is all assembled I will start the 2D drawing package.
You will never find me knocking anyone's drawings as I have never completed a set that did not have errors.
I have found a few in the Harris book but nothing that would stop you from being able to make a model from. I say this, as I do not believe a rank beginner would attempt this without some form of machine shop experience.

What about making the clutch pads larger? I would wonder if doubling the slots could weaken the axle too much since this engine would have about 4x the power of the original.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
HMMMM. Let me think on this. I do not think it would be a problem as the gear is rather beefy to start with. Also there are no holes in the disc now with a wall thickness of 3/8 inch. What about making the clutch pads larger? I would wonder if doubling the slots could weaken the axle too much since this engine would have about 4x the power of the original.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
Project continues thru the Holidays. Needless to say I am slow. I have most of the parts drawn in 3D and building assembles with the drawing software.
I have also started doing the 2D renderings to do the machining from.
I will start to post some of these but would ask for constructive comments with the note I am not a draftsman at all.

Understanding I need to add the notes explaining this is a extension of Mr. Harris's work and that it is not for resale, this is the format I am using to enlarge his design.
I will also make a note that the book has all the notes on how to machine and assemble the various parts.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
I scratch built a hoist engine about thirty years ago in 1.5" scale. It is the one that is used in the D&RGW derrick OP. The only parts I purchased were the spur gears. I made one pattern for the upper drum support cast in bronze everything else is scratch built.

The time on the drawings has gone well over the holidays.
The frame is finished, and the engine to frame to engine mounting is finishing up.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
The efforts on the drawings continue,
And today John called and said four sets of cylinder castings are on the way. Looks like we will be moving from a design discussion to a build a long.

Re: The William Harris Steam Donkey Engine in 2.5 inch Scale
Note to the true engineers and draftsmen out there.
I in no way was ever trained in drafting or 3d modeling. Well, I did have a drafting class in 1968 in Jr High, and I did read a book called "Solidworks No Experience Required".
This being said I am sure my drawings do not meet any standard out there. I did not always follow William Harris's dimensioning method.
My dimensioning is based on my shop practice of using my DRO, making all measurements from a corner X and Y point. This makes it easy for me to lay out holes.
I am at the point of making 2D drawings from all the modeled pieces.
Of Course, any positive inputs are greatly appreciated.
