Cattails foundry

Post by Glenn Brooks »

Anybody know if Cattails Foundry is currently doing cast iron work? I read a news article dated in 2021 that they imported their cast iron from Austria and Russia. Wondering if the Russian war in Ukraine has disrupted their iron supply?

Thanks,
Glenn

Cattail Foundry is still turning out iron as far as I know. I was there about two years ago, and was told "iron pays the bills". Bronze and brass only happens when a significant number of custom jobs is collected.

I heard that their source of iron was local to PA, mostly processed scrap. I would be very surprised if they were importing pig iron.

A local Pa news article said they mix 15% new iron in with their recycled stuff to ensure consistency. The article reported they import this new iron from Russia and Austria.

Most iron shops run a mix of pig iron, their own returns and scrap steel. Russia and Ukraine were big suppliers of pig iron to the U.S. When their supply dried up the prices jumped way up and big U.S. foundries scrambled to buy everything they could find. Cattails wouldn't be big enough to buy direct but their source could easily have been sending them Russian/Ukraine materials.

Cattail is business as usual.

I spoke with Emanuel two weeks ago. Prices are as they were, meaning they have not gone up due to the immediate crises in the world.

Realizing this means nothing to anyone that has not dealt with their business model.
