Post by Pennsy fan »

Well after making 140 parts just for the working clasp brakes and getting the rest of 40 trucks parts done. They are done, now to the frame.

Dave,

Looks like your Coast to Coast tender will have plenty of much needed braking power.

Who was the supplier of the castings for your trucks?

trucks

Hi Robert,
They are mountain cars.
As for the weight the tank should hold over 30 gal of water, I think. And I am
over 230 + coal then the tender itself. So yes I hope the brakes do well.
We have good grades here at the L.A. club and it's nice to have good control
of the train.

Responce, the 1st: Nice looking trucks! They look like you've spent a good deal of time on them. : ]

Responce, the 2nd: I'm glad you posted those photos... It's the first time I've had a chance to see how these style trucks function from the inside. : ] One of these days I might have to try and do them in 1:29th...

Thanks Fox, yes there is a ton of time in these. Around 40 hrs.
If you want try your hand doing a set check out one of the locomotive cyclopedias that have the trucks in prints. I have a 1941, 1950-52. I don't know what one has them but I know I have seen them.
I got a set of prints from a friend of mine so this what I used, also prints that came with mountian car trucks.

If I ever do it I suspect I'll be making simply functional trucks that don't look much like the originals. I know of no castings in my scale for such complex trucks... not even dummies! I know I could get them made for the right amount of money... but that's more money than I'll likely be willing to spend. } ; ] Who knows? We're talking years into the future here anyway. : )

I assume this was a MCC kit. Did you turn the wheels, or was it partially finished?

Why did you choose MCC over Tom Bee or Mason's? Are there any other mfgs, out there... anybody have experience with others?

I read the thread earlier and these were the three mentioned. Any others?

I used MCC because the trucks I needed for the tender has the timken bearing covers. As for truck castings I got got them raw, but the wheels came finished. Also I made the axels. As for others there is the set for NKP birk from real trains, very nice but NOT cheap. These have lost wax parts
and are scale. $3200 a pair. These have roller bearings but are the plain bearing style caps so I couldn't use them.

Dave,

I am curious, does anyone supply a four axle Buckeye truck? Say similar to the ones tucked under a Chesapeake and Ohio H-8 Allegheny?

Looks like I was wrong.

Granted, those are 1:32 scale and come on a very expensive, nearly museum-quality live-steam Berk from Aster in Japan... : (
