Coles' 1" Four wheel switcher

Post by AWDPete » Tue Feb 14, 2006 9:08 am

I have an older Coles catalogue/price sheet that lists the 4-3/4" gauge four wheel switcher - is it still available? There website is down.

Has anyone built or seen one of these run?

Bill Eisenlohr from South Jersey built one about 20 years ago. He did a real nice job, and it ran great when he brought up to the NJLS. There were some construction articles in The Miniature Locomotive, a magazine put out in the early 50's.

Thanks for the reply Marty :)

Early 50's? I wasn't aware this kit's been around that long! If the response I've recieved is any indication it doesn't sound like too many of these have been built, curious......

I have to admit that I have never heard of this magazine, I will have to try to find it somewhere.

I knew of a guy who built the tender, then quit. But he's now passed on, so I can't ask him any questions for you, sorry.

Now I can get there!

I just looked and the current catalog is #26, the same one I have in front of me although my price sheet is dated Oct.30 2003. That makes the catalog at least 3 years old, the good news is they haven't increased the price since then!

I guess I will have to give 'em a call to see if they have any.

Beware of them saying that they have the item, I have been told that and waited for months.

We've got a gentleman in our group that has castings for the Cole's 0-4-0. I believe he started working on them but then lost interest in the project. There was also a set at Gail Gish's fall run for sale for a very reasonable price.... though I don't remember who was selling them. If you're interested I can pass along contact info.

Jim Gould in Ann Arbor , Michigan has one that he would like to sell. He bought it unfinished about 17 years ago. It is running on air. It has a boiler but Jim doesn't think it is good enough to use. If you're interested send me a message and I'll put you in touch with him.
