Boiler Builders

Post by theg8nw »

Hello everyone,
I have finally had a chance to continue work on my 1.5 scale LE (new) Northern and have make some great progress in the last months. But here is my problem now, Im shopping for a boiler builder out there. I have already sent out a rfq to marty but just wondering who else is out there, or if there is a new one out sitting out there collecting dust somewhere. I missed out on the on that was on discover live steam and have tried going to their suppliers page but it doesn't work. Also have tried google search but not finding much.. any ideas out there??
Thanks in advance...
John

I've only heard of Ed Perry and Wayne Godshall. I've personally seen one of Wayne's boilers and a couple of Marty's. And in my honest opinion..... Marty's are hard to beat! I don't know anything about Ed.

There's a reason why so many choose Marty !

Marty's boilers are impossible to beat.

If I didn't make my own, I would go there without an instant of hesitation...

Maybe because it IS the fact that I make my own that I would ONLY go to Marty.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Depends on where in the country you are located? If you are in New England there is a good fabricator in MA who many of us up that way have used. Send me a private message if want his contact info.

Wayne Godshall builds a very nice boiler, and does nice machine work.

One of the old owners of Little Engines- located out west, I cannot remember the gentleman's name- also builds boilers. The name John Braun (corrected) is sticking out in my head. He recently built one for our club's steam engine.

Edit: The company is Mammoth Locomotive Works in Colorado.

Couldn't hurt to contact Wasatch RR Contractors in Cheyenne. They've been building Cagney and other small boilers as well as full sized locomotive boilers.
I have no affiliation with them, just know they have a great reputation and John Rimmasch is a heads up guy who knows his business.

Fast - Good - Cheap .... pick any two.

For a code or built-to-code boiler:
#1 Eastern US - Marty Knox, Ridge Boiler (you get more than what you pay for)
#1 Western US - Paul Boschan, Redman Boiler (prices depended on current shop work load, and his quality is leaps and bounds better than it was when he ran his own shop. He's on the ASME pressure vessel committee so he's on par with Marty for knowledge about boilers)
#2 John Rimmasch, Wasatch Railroad Contractors (have worked with him before, would reluctantly do so again)

For just a hobby boiler:
Jesse Banning, JD Locomotive Works (amazing design & fabrication skills. hasn't built a code boiler yet, but is capable)
Ed Perry (I can't think of any compliments)
Wyane Godshall (not personally familiar enough with his work to say much, but have not heard anything negative)

Cheers,

I have been running an Ed Perry boiler for ten years. No complaints at all.
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

Doug Herring in NC builds boilers as well. He advertises on the DLS for sale page.
