Old Sidney Collieries No. 25

Post by tsph6500 »

UKlocoNut has been designing a 3-1/2" g. steamer for beginners with minimal skills and equipment. It can be built from A3 or Raritan casting or fabricated bits.

This loco is on display at the entrance to the Canadian Railway Museum in Delson, QC.

2-4-0 Steam Locomotive:
1900 - Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works as Nova Scotia Steel & Coal #8
19xx - Old Sydney Colleries #25
19xx - Dominion Steel & Coal Corp #25
1962 - Retired

Interesting details are the reversed Stephenson links and and her miss-matched drivers. Three have square counterweights and one is a crescent. The engine was built as a sidetanker which explains the smokebox mounting of the air compressor, which will be a feedwater pump on the models.

A 1-inch model was designed by members of MLS in the late 1960's but it was decided that the club would lay 7-1/4" track at their new home. Several sets of castings for the 1-1/2" scale version were poured, perhaps a dozen but only two engines were completed and two others disappeared close to being finished. One remains in operation at the OVSME in Ottawa.

Please explain about the "Reversed Links"? My 0-4-0 Marie Estelle looks the same?

Marie E also has "reversed links." In most normal situations, the eccentrics are on the main drivers and the links are forward of that axle.

She's so short (wheelbase) that she looks like a broad. :)

Many years ago, a guy built one of these in 1 1/2 scale. There was an article in Modeltec I think. I bought a set of drawings from him. Its a cute design.

Was the tender original to the engine? It looks European, sort of like the ones that LGB used to sell for their O&K "Stainz" engines in G scale. I don't recall seeing many engines with tenders like that on this side of the ocean.

If you looked at the pictures for the original locomotive you would see it did have a 4 wheel "bobber" truck.

"General Mining Association" became "Nova Scotia Steel & Coal" sometime in the late 1890s.

Just for the heck of it here's the Baldwin spec sheet for the engine:

Apparently she was built as a saddle tank engine.
