measuring torque

Hiya all

Seeing as I have some unlabelled servo motors at home, and more still in an old machine I will strip soon, I got to wondering how to measure the torque.

Some of the servos still have various speed feedback devices attached, one has some sort of magnetic thing, the others have slotted disks (not 1000 slots though!).

I suspect some of them were tossed out because the speed feedback failed, these are from the printing units fancy bulk printers, they replace anything that breaks (and I pick it up off the junk pile outside).

Although not the best method, put a pulley on the shaft with a known radius (about 6 inch would be nice.) then hang a weight on a cord on the pulley. Keep increasing the weight until the motor can nolonger lift it. This will get you an approximate stall torque by radiusXweight.
