Building my cnc lathe

Wondering if there is any reason to have the spindle tied to the pc when using a lathe only as a chucker? I can see threading or rpm and on/off but don't know why I can't run a stepper for the carriage and crossfeed and go.

I'd think you can, but you will have no direct correlation for feed/revolution to spindle RPM. A fancy convenience for known chip load perhaps. NOT having it will require YOU to be on your toes before you commit to pushing GO!
