Converting an STL File to G-Code

Post by FLtenwheeler »

Hi All

I am looking for recommendations for a program that will convert STL files to G-Code. It does not have to be free but I cannot afford to spend thousands.

is this 3 dimensional where you need surface normal to machine a surface or 2.5 dimensional where the tool is always XYZ only?
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Hi Bill

It will be done on a standard CNC bridgeport.

OK, so it is 3 axis.

is it a 2.5D file or something that needs 3 dimensional surface normals?

Hi Bill

It is a full 3D. I have had some parts RPed. But how that I am work with the molds and waxs I am thing that some parts can be CNC machined.

I think what Bill is trying to say is many parts do not require a curved profile that would require 3D but many parts or patterns can be made with shaped cutter bits and 2.5D software that only requires something like SheetCam which generates code from DXF files. I have made many parts and patterns doing just that. Only a few of my Shay castings required the 3D.
