Lathe with t slot cross slide

Post by Dan B »

Howdy all. I remember seeing photos of some older lathes that had what looked like a small mill bed on the cross slide. I've been doing some boring on my SB lathe where the boring head is in the spindle and the work piece is held by a milling attachment. Being able to remove the compound and have a bed to mount work to would be nice. Does anyone know what make of lathes have those type of cross slides?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi There,

Do you mean something like this:

Cross Slide

Or this:

Atlas/Craftsman Type Cross Slide

These are castings that you have to machine out yourself.

Good Luck!

Most of these slotted cross-slides are going to be seen on small British lathes, Myford and Boxford for instance, but castings for extended/slotted cross slides for South Bend lathes specifically have been available for many years from here http://www.statecollegecentral.com/meta ... -4382.html

Operating machines is perfectly safe......until you forget how dangerous it really is!

Wow thanks for the info! I had no idea those were available after market.
My SB is a bit worn out. I just got a Jet from the late 70s with little to no wear. Does anyone know if such a cross slide is available for it?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan, my lathe has dovetails on the sides of the cross slide to allow a rear toolpost to be fitted. I made a table that sits on the cross slide and clamps with those dovetails and takes the 1/2-13 studs from my mill clamp kits. You might consider doing something like that.

Check the dimensions and see if it will fit your lathe:

I have a 10x 36 Rockwell lathe.I made a new crosslide from a piece of iron from Speedy metals. For most operations when the compound isn't needed I have a solid block that the quick change mounts on. Made a solid holder for a insert type parting blade on the backside. Thrilled with the results , and it was a fun project.

I'm with SteveM, that slide project came out looking very "pro".

BTW, for those of you with 10" or 12" Atlas lathes, you can get one here:

I would have bought that, except that I already have one. You usually don't find one with all the parts at once.

Here's what the full setup looks like on an Atlas, including the turret tailstock (have one of those too):
