Rough and Tumble

Post by kvom »

My wife and I attended the Rough and Tumble show last week. It was quite an experience with 100 traction engines on display as well as many other interesting engines of all sorts. On the site is a narrow gauge Shay engine that provides passenger service around the property. In talking to the engineer, I found that this engine had been scratch built onsite, starting with the boiler from a steam tractor.

I believe it was scratch build nearby, but not onsite. It did have a traction engine boiler, however it was down last year for a replacement and this year was sporting a brand new boiler! Looked like it was running well, other than a few quick repairs needed to one of the trucks!

...must be nice when you can go to the corner hardware store or local big box store to get needed plumbing supplies and fittings! :wink: Carl B.

Heh! Reminds me of my endless admonition to describe grinding wheels properly. They are not stones (although there was a time when they were)--they are wheels. :lol:

Kinzer, PA. Just east of Lancaster, PA on US rt 30. I think that they are open year round but the best tine to go is during the annual Old Thrashersman Reunion usually the middle of August. Runs Wednesday thru Saturday. See here http://www.roughandtumble.org/

Check their schedule on their website. They are NOT open year round, but many of the items including the trains are running during events that have throughout the year.

Dunno about that. Back in my railroad days we often referred to the piping on a locomotive as plumbing, e.g., air brake plumbing or fuel plumbing. :D

Hello,
The Rough & Tumble Engineers Museum only holds three(3) open days a year, they include;
Spring steam up, Threshermans Reunion, and the Fall harvest.

There are other events held at R&T such as John Deer days, tractor pulls, an International Harvester days. BUT they are separate events and the R&T buildings are not open or included in admission on those days.

Sign up for spring steam school is on the first day of Fall Harvest. You get to learn to operate the following; traction engines, little toot (15 gauge). and shay railroad. see website for details.
http://www.roughandtumble.org/

Any one interested in learning to operating the stationary steam engines contact me. You need to become a member and show up on work days ( first Sat of the month April to Nov).
