K4 RE PAINT
I have started the process of re painting the 1361 I'm using paint remover and carefully working around the detail. The paint remover is water soluble and I am using a wire brush, Working on one section at a time I apply the remover and wait about 5 minutes and scrub it with a wire brush. When this process is completed I will de grease the locomotive and then mask off the areas that I don't want DGLE and prime it with etching primer. Finally I will repaint it with Dark Green Locomotive Enamel.

Hey Trainman4602,
Thank you for posting your method of painting your superb looking K4! That's what I have to do with my A1239 next year, too.

Re: K4 RE PAINT
I have use many different primers. I have found S.E.M. the best. comes black. Others I have used is zink cromemite primer, pick up at NAPA but have to order it sometimes. SEM is found at Automotive Paint stores. I must say this way your doing it would be hard. But to do it the way I would is time consuming also. I would strip the engine down and remove the boiler to remove the rapper if have too. You got a big project Dave. I am sure you doing it correctly because only you know it because you built it. Have fun.
Re: K4 RE PAINT
Dave, Can you tell us (me) what kind of paint you're using, where you got it from, any paint codes, etc.. Also the type of primer, sprayer, etc.. I'm very interested in your process, I'll be doing the same thing to my G tender as soon as it gets warm enough to paint outside..
Thanks; John

Dave,
I’m curious about the longevity of the original paint job you are removing.
Do you have a date (or approximate year) as to when the previous paint job was applied to the locomotive?
Thanks.
John

Re: K4 RE PAINT
I'm finally getting back to the re paint project. Bad and cold weather early in April caused a delay in finishing. Last week I primed and painted all the piping and the other parts. Today I primed the boiler jacket. I'll paint the color on tomorrow.
I also painted the yellow gold for the lettering. Last week I generated the numbers using CAD and printed them out on my vinyl letter cutting machine.
I'm not a big fan of using vinyl lettering on locomotives. I use it on cars but the locomotive has a harsher environment so I paint them. Firts I paint the letter color on the area that will be the number area.
Next I apply the vinyl numbers. I then spray clear over the numbers This seals the numbers so the primer and color paint will not bleed under. Its an old trick that I learned during my RC air plane days when you used to build and paint them no mono-cote then.
Then the primer over everything. Tomorrow the color and on to reassembly.

Painted on the DGLE today DGLE stands for Dark Green Locomotive Enamel AKA Brunswick Green
The green looks black until you shine a light on it or take a flash picture.
Now on to the re assembly tomorrow.
