Kirkwall Central

Post by Steve Bratina »

Here is where I am after working on this thing for five years. The bridgework is complete, the switch stands are in and working, most of the landscaping is done and I am starting to cut ties. The two way switches are thrown using two switch stands from work while the three way is a home built job. The two ways have adjustable stops at either end to line up the track when thrown. A 1 1/2" black pipe is used as a spring to hold the switch bridge against the stop. The three way had a three position plate to line up the leaver (not installed yet) and fixed stops on the main and shop track. The centre or water track, has a movable stop. It stays in place when working the main and water track but is lifted when you want to access the shop lead.
There is a lead at either end for coming and going. The bays are on rollers so the engine can be rolled to or from the track. This prevents anyone getting trapped as with a transfer table set up.
Next year is for putting down patio stones, laying the track, installing the signals and fixing all the bugs out of the whole shebang.
Here are some picture. (I hope they load as I seem to be having troubles here.

I should point out that the south shop lead is not in place as we will park our RV under the canopy for the winter. This is a high line for 3/4 and 1".

Awesome! I just received orders from headquarters last night that a high-line has been approved for our house. Won't be as elaborate as this but it will at least allow for making steam and playing choo choo!

Great!

How long and minimum radius?

Does this mean you won't be visiting us at the NJLS any more?

Hello My Friends
Wow, what a wonderful railway. My hat's off to you as your engineering of the track and switches looks superb. The use of full size switch stands is also a nice touch. The setting, with the lawn and trees surrounding your railway... very cool. You have been very busy. I know how much work it is!
It's great to see another high line.
