Let me know what weight/foot you need(Maybe Harold can work out span vs. loading for you?)
In 5' lengths there is a lot of rems to choose from in W8 and W10 sizes.

Sounds like a good plan, being able to bolt on various beams to the A-frame. Also allows break down for easy transport obviously.

Ryan, thanks. Got your PM this evening. I think I have a 5’ length of 4x6” beam that may work. I’ll dig it out and measure it tomorrow and let you know. Glenn

Finally finished up my gantry crane for the shop.

Here’s a few photos of the assembly and final product.

Very nice! That will serve you well.

Only suggestion:
The flat-profile wheels might resist steering when loaded.
I know this from my two engine stands.
One has flat profile wheels (same red polymer as yours) and is difficult to rotate when loaded, while the other has slightly rounded profile wheels and "steers" much easier.
I am considering replacing those flat wheels, since those engine carts need to move around when loaded with a locomtive.

Looking good Glenn. For the castors I've found they are a bit of a catch 22. The round profile wheels seem to move easier but will drop into any cracks or expansion joints in the concrete. While the flat ones will go over such imperfections but are harder to move and come to an abrupt stop if you hit some little piece of gravel...or perhaps that missing screw that was dropped on the floor. Pick your poison.

Thanks guys. Iam using the flat wheels because I had them in the shop. Thinking about swapping out to the round ones, but I need ones rated at 1000# each - pretty spendy, so, elected to use up my NOS.

Also, my main use for the gantry will be to lift boilers and rail cars off the building stand, and,
Aymdown on the cart. I don’t expect to necessarily push it around loaded. So a bit of an experiment, and a learning curve for sure.

At last. Spring railroading season is upon us. We arrived back in the PNW 3 weeks ago and opened up the house and shop over the last few weeks for the 2019 run schedule. Lots to do with two flat cars and a riding car build. Also a bunch of refurbishment on an early day atlas shaper - pre B model unit, VN 12 universal Milling machine, and learning how to operate my new to me Bridgeport clone.

But first, landscaping. here in the PNW, Right now is the ideal time for landscaping and spring planting. The ground drys out to the consistency of concrete in another month or so, then can turn to dust latter when drought conditions set in during mid summer. So I always try to lay in the garden, plant new plants, and do rock work during these nice, early, wet soil conditions.

Mostly I have been landscaping along the ROW. Of course using a work train to haul materials around the back yard. Last week hauled out 2 big flat car loads of winter deadfall from the deep forest. Today, Here’s what I managed to load this afternoon onto my poor workhouse of a flat car. The belly in the center of the flat is definitely not an optical illusion. According to the yard super at Home Depot, these 45 cement blocks weigh in at just under 3000#. The car groans a bit when I push it down the track, but does a yomen’s job once it gets rolling. It’ll be interesting to run a straightedge along the frame and see how much deflection these blocks really cause.
