graphite twine packing

Post by hoppercar »

where can you get the braided graphite twine, for stuffing boxes now ?...the type, that you can untwist into several smaller strings for small stuffing boxes?...I used to get it at coles, but since they are long gone..now I cant find it?..hardware stores have the 1/8 square solid kind, but not the strippable type ?

A good mechanical/plumbing supply, or maybe the local Big Box.

McMaster-Carr offers an 1/8 inch square graphite packing that can be unraveled into individual strings with good results. Lubricate all of the parts with some of the silver anti-sieze high temp grease and pack with the graphite packing. Things will work well for a long time if the moving part are well polished.
