Dick, thanks for reporting on this. The scroll work and detail showing in the photographs is quite intricate and interesting. I wonder if the row of small holes drilled across the bottom front of the lantern are for ventilating the combustion chamber ? Maybe allow enuf air to pass into the wick to equalize pressure while the loco was underway?
