Operations Manual SB 9

Post by Carlos »

Hi all, just got my SB 9 😁😁😁

Now I need an operations manual and parts list.

I did already buy and read the “how to run a lathe” fromSB.

But what I need is an explanation how to handle the machine itself. Like how to engage the powercrossfeed, how to reverse it, which lever does what, maintenance, lub chart, etc...

Can anyone point me where I can download it?

Thx for the help.

Not to be fussy about it but there are differences between years and models.

Ah,sure, right. Was too exited, ok.
I have the model 9A built in 1943. Serial 141400.
I searched online but not very successful yet.

South Bend's book "How to run a lathe" is about as close to a operations manual as you will get. As for parts lists go to this link.

Thank J.E. for this link which gets you to the particulars. The 9A is the QCGB under drive motor type with steel cabinet bench. Things varied between 1943 and 1951. Spindle bearings became Timken roller bearings. The head cover would not open unless the cabinet side lever disengaged the flat belt drive to the spindle. The directional feed lever is somewhat cumbersome. It is at left side of head requiring a wrench to move it forward neutral reverse. So every time you move it, you have to think about gear lash. Tight is not right. There is no detent, so I scribed a line in the paint to where it was proper for me. Since mine has a collet closer mounted, the side cover doesn't open very far. I found a box end wrench, Square type, which fits the square bolt perfectly and it lives there.
Saving the best for last; Practical Machinist has an entire forum about South Bend lathes. You can find out the History of your lathe which may be exciting during WWII .

I believe Grizzly purchased the South Bend business and records.
That purchase included all of the original machine manufacturing cards.
For a price they will send you a .pdf copy of your machine's manufacturing record.
